Book 17. Part Four. 8

The penultimate scene from Part Four. We’re back to Bob and his team tomorrow. I’m about finished with the Epilogue, but that may have to wait until after the conference. Or, if I’ve a moment, I may post it from there.

It’s taken a year, but I am pleased as to where everything seems to be going. I wonder what my next project will be? I’m thinking of taking it easy and writing a few short stories for the rest of summer.

“What the hell is going on here!” Captain Macarthy demanded, stupidly taking his eyes off his targets to look at his boss regain his feet.  The Russians didn’t move.

Just then, the alarms started.

“What,” Van Atta asked, wiping his mouth, “are you two idiots trying to pull?”

“As you have affirmed,” Gogol said as they both stood, too, “it seems our national is not at this facility.  We shall take our leave.”

“You two are not going anywhere until I find out what is going on!” the Director shouted.  “Captain, take–”

“Three,” Gogol said in Russian.  Both men drew their pistols.  Konev shot Macarthy in the chest while Gogol showed off with a head shot of Van Atta.

“We go,” the Major said.  They made for the door, pistols pointed down in front of them.

We Russians have the best diplomacy, Konev thought.

The two Chekists in the atrium they also shot; dead or wounded didn’t matter.  They were down for now.  Gogol walking forward and Konev back, they made for their car, hearing shots and now explosions from the top of the prison, proper.

We played our role.  Helping the imperials is not an option.  Only once the car was started and beginning to role did Konev get in.  Taking the last turn before the chainlink fence, his Major floored it.

At the same time they burst through the gate, there was a bang and flash of light overhead and off to their right.

Hardt helped me and my men…

“Should we…?” he began.

“No,” was Gogol’s sharp answer as they heard some shots from the gate guards before turning another corner.  “You and I are straight to the embassy and may leave by extraordinary means in a few hours.  This will give the war faction in Canada everything they want to die in a bloody and incinerated spasm.”

Konev said nothing, trying to look into the dark every direction at once.
