Had today off. Saw a little of the political dynamic of Sylvia and the OKC politician. The fact that Ninon, one of the three machines that has never spoken to humans just spoke up made my fingers twitch so much I could barely type.
PS My use of “Look homeward, angel” is from Milton’s Lycidas. I’d no idea that Tom Wolfe, whom I admire, used it for a book title. Another moment when the intarwebs steer you to a place you do not want to be; and, if you don’t prepossess the knowledge, you are led to something wrong.

As a guest of the local county library system, I am a “Featured Local Author” for a book fair on Saturday. My 3+1 prior works are all in the box, ready to go. I’ll be making a 60×40 inch backdrop will all covers and something about Machine Civilization on it to hang behind me. Cash to make change and my Square card-reader for the plastic. I’ve learned from observation to bring candy and put it in a bowl on my table. People will stop and, guilty about taking something for nothing, ask about the books. Sneaky, sneaky!
This is a jacket & tie event for me, so I’ll be cosplaying an adult. An adult with a flask of whiskey; the close of the event could prove much more interesting that its open.
The sole partial fail is that I’ve only five proof copies of “Friend and Ally” available. I’ll have a sign-up sheet if anyone else is interested, but still, that’s on me. There will also be a laminated image of the front cover of “Foes and Rivals,” that Jacoby Alley should have complete in two days, with “Coming for Xmas 2018!”
And my table cover. And the price sheet. And the easel. And the business cards. And…
I’m credibly informed they do not keep your breath fresh.
Less than 36 hours after my declaration that “I’m not writing anything new this year!”… I saw something.
No, I’m not writing anything new in November (he dessemulates); I’m far too busy for the Book Fair of the 17th and the release of “F&R” three weeks later!
But. I saw the cover of my next book. It’s bright to dark as you look right to left. You see the sides of four older teenagers: machine Henge, with her purple hair & gold eyes looks at her intended, human Gary with love. He returns that look, while back to back with his sister Faustina, with her dark hair & glittering turquoise eyes, as she looks to the figure in shadow on the cover’s left, tempting her to evil.
This is going to be seriously awesome. I’ve explored a little of this in my ‘Second Bridge’ and ‘Worlds Without End’ writing exercises, even noting at the time that Faustina needs her own novel…
That time is soon.
I’m fully aware what a catastrophe the two “ending” posts of Foes & Rivals looked like: they looked like shit.
My objective that weekend was to make an end; and, just for Nichole, I managed a poor one.
Do Gil & Mac really…? What about Brunelli and Reilly? Is all hope lost? And what’s with Nike’s mystical bullshit?…
…are all questions I asked myself. And re-wrote, and addressed. Each book is a challenge to myself; F&R was borrowing from Larry Niven: how to destroy your own world? To a large degree, I met that challenge. And I’m never doing it again. I’ve no idea what – or who – comes next. But, no more misery.
I’ll make a first-pass edit of all this, this week, push it onto my talented copyeditor. In the mean time, I’ll finally get about implementing her changes for Friend and Ally and release that into the wild.

Between the cheap wine, caffeine tabs, and lisinopril, I’m keeping at it every night this week. As I was finishing this up, I was, thank God, allowed to see that a brigade of the Nation is already closing on the flimsy position the City has north of the bridge. This will allow me to avoid any prolonged battle and instead precipitate the domino-like collapse of first Portland’s armed defense followed by its civil collapse.
In the mean time, let’s wrap things up with the Mayor.

Getting some of my main characters back together, even if only for a little while. I need things in one direxion to be political and in the other, personal. I wish it would be Mackenzie that somehow get’s ahold of Gil, who deserts and rides back to PSU once Nichole is finished with her talk with the Mayor, but Mac and Gil have no radios…
Or. Did he just recently give her something that he and the other’s at Ludlum Electric put together? Not so much a radio as a ‘panic button’? Hmmm. I’ll ponder that one. I admit, it’s kinda lame, but it get’s Gil to Mac moments before Nichole comes busting in with her Iliad of Woes from the North. N5 has talked the Mayor into trying to talk his way out of this… but what if Rhun and his people refuse to listen?

Between men and women are bad enough. Alliances? Blood, everywhere. I’ve written a bit more, but will try to add to it and post it, tomorrow. Must make an end…

In an absurd burst of enthusiasm, I thought I could finish the manuscript this weekend. My new doctor certainly wants me to: “you’re drinking too much; your liver numbers are shot to hell.” Great. I told her I’ll cut back in a week or so, once finished.
It has been a difficult transitional period in the story. I did NOT want to write yet another battle, swirling about Nichole, but was uncertain how to write around it. Last night, after watching a few old music videos, I saw the part of Nichole and Armando having a quiet moment – not a war moment – in the back of the MRAP. That let’s me tell the story to the point where things fall to shit and she get’s out of there, on a mad dash south, where she’ll encounter Major Muller & his 2nd Detachment of Cavalry as well as Friend Joe, serving in Militia A, holding the supply line between Portland and Longview.
After that? Into the City with the Nation on their heels. Rocks fall; everyone dies. I’m so happy to be writing this…

Just about everyone is where they need to be. Some shuttle diplomacy by Nichole, getting Brunelli, Reilly, and Jenkins back into the fray, and then I can let everything go to hell. How nice, for me.
Did I mention I’m taking the rest of the year off after this?
