New Pai, 2

Wife woke up at 0011 complaining of aches and pains. She also had – and has – a fever. One of our weekend pharmacists says influenza is endemic in central Ohio right now. Boomers panic and go to the hospitals, so now there are no beds. It’s the fookin’ flu. Yes, it sucks, but maybe it’s your time, Mr. and Mrs. “We’re spending our childrens’ inheritance.”

So, I’ll post what I have as I’m not sure when I’ll be back to the keyboard. With this RealLife illness, I also mention how Graf was sick early in their mission.

With Mindy’s Intended there, I now have a fresh set of eyes to look at what is going on. He’s obviously not comfortable with the Graf/Pai/Alix situation, but is quickly distracted in hearing of Fusions. And, Graf and Min’s father experiences a little healing, thinking what future might be for his grandchildren.

New Pai, 1

New section, so new section title. It shall start in a calm, bucolic setting, but I hope the world catches fire in a few ten-thousand words. I do recall that Graf and Pai were married on this land, and that Alix was there, too. That was just before their, ah, agreement. Has she been back, since? I’ll find out and let y’all know.

My love of writing discussions over meals is nigh-well legendary, and this shall lead to another one. Pai will act like a maid to try to not call attention to herself, as it seems Minny’s beau, introduced below, is not sure what to think about all this, and her sitting in front of an empty plate might put him off.

In the background, we have a team of speculatores, one of many, making sure there will be no problems for Aurie’s annexation plans. I seriously doubt there will be any dialog, there. Also, there’s that secret “in two days” Pai mentioned. She knows, of course, so I do, too. Even Alix does. Poor Graf has no idea…

PAI, 26

Unlike Grandma Ildi and even little Doe, this one seems to believe her own hype. So far as I know, Fusions have the same that a demi-human has: speed of thought and access to the Void. The wings and halo are just sorta there. The fact she’s carrying a battlerifle rather reinforces that notion. Still, they do seem to inspire some odd kind of reverence in humans. I suspect, but don’t know, that there is something in their nature which manifests that. We’ll have to find out.

I also am beginning to lean in on what or why Graf is so important to these people. That will keep for the next section, after Redding.

Pai discovers that name dropping still works.

PAI, 25

With the San Diego arc now safely behind us, I went on a 4000-word tear this weekend, esp after Mass, when I was gifted the last few scenes. So, we find our characters a few hundred miles north in a town which anchors the DMZ between the Russians and Mexicans, policed by legionaries following a treaty forced on them by a Texan, Kali. God’s agent.

But immediately, they realized things are amiss. Graf and Pai try to play “nice” but are overtaken by events. Well, they are overtaken by someone. This is a 4-way political mess. I just hope there’s no killing in this arc.

PGA, 1, Start of Part 2

Beginning Part 2. And beginnings are delicate things, especially this one. We learn the story has moved on a few years. Then, from their report, that there are some odd beliefs about the Demis and Machines starting to arise. Finally, while Graf and Pai are married, there is the question of Alix. And what a question. I am going to have to tread very, very carefully here to not say or do something that is theologically or morally compromised. At least, more than it already is.

So, I being to lay out just what be going on for the rest of this part of the book. I’ll have to put it on hold once I get serious about that other project.

Pai-Graf, 4/x

A rival appears. Never had something like this shown to me before. Plenty of romances, sure, but to have Alix come out of nowhere and immediately lay claim to the main character? Who is already spoken for? I’m on very unfamiliar ground, right now. This is either take the story places I have not imagined or will wreck it on the rocks in about a thousand words. We shall see.

In the background there is more I want to know about Ceres, and these two girls are not helping. And “my flesh needs to be fed” sailed right over the heads of both humans. That will definitely come up next.

Pai-Graf, 3/x

A quiet segment. Having finally arrived for her meeting, Pai essentially ditches Graf, who spends some time on the lake. Trust me, things get very, very interesting in the next segment, so we all needed this breather. Her little bit of exposition about his demise gets him thinking; considering death usually does.

For those of you interested, yes, Faction: With the Crusaders is real. I internet-know the author and I very highly recommend it. His first book was not really my thing, but this is historical fiction and one hell of a story. When I’m able, I’ll need to write a review for him. People on “our side of the river” need all the support we can get.

Annexation (5/4 End)

Strange week; much RealLife drama I do not need. Picking at another short story, but nothing really clicking yet. I shall be patient.

Most autocrats enjoy it when people stand up to them, just because it doesn’t happen very often. The imperium’s bureaucracy is very small, as Fussy can do the work of many humans and do it faster, but I’m sure they are rather obsequious. I doubt her legates are. Forewarned by Old Dysart, Stephen does not put up with her shit, either.

Annexation (4/4?)

Stepping up posting a bit as it will force me to finish this. There will be a Part Five, a conclusion. My notes from last night are awful, so I’ll flog them together later today.

In RealLife, I had to do preliminary tax work this morning. Ours are complicated so we’ve used a CPA for twenty years. Since the Fed’s Magic Money Machine can just go brrr, brrr, filing taxes is nothing more than a humiliation ritual the Cloud People use to show how much they hate us.

Below, Stephen meets Fussy for the first time and, I think, likes what he sees. He is a cautious and reserved man, which I think is why I had to write a part 5; nothing happens quickly. In fact, from my notes, nothing really happens.

Annexation (3/4?)

Now we get a look at the other side of the hill. Fussy is obviously up to something and we’ll have to see just how diplomatic Johnston can be once he arrives. Telling that he goes to his boss’ father for advice rather than the current president of the GSS.

Updates may take a hit as there are unwelcome RealWorld matters I’ll need to see to. Even so, I’d like to think I’ll have this story complete within a week.
