I swear I did not think about Allie’s name vis a vis that other girl who fell down a hole until yesterday. At least this way I dodged a huge discussion of politics. Maybe that will be tossed into the lap of Anton, next.
The thought I had in the lead-in of the last segment was enough to have Allie voice it to Fussy; outside of war, no one should have to bury their children or grandchildren. Longevity is a curse.

Continue reading ““The Fallen” 5/3″Another reflective segment. No politics as yet. Given that Fussy now knows literally everything Allie recalls from her little adventure, I’d imagine she thinking very hard about what comes next while talking to her husband and this little hero.
I only found out how sad Fussy was, the regrets, on my drive home from DayJob today. As we know from Regent, Aurie possesses a certain bloodlust. It was always just a job for Fussy. And from what they now know from her brother Gary, she realizes that she will outlive her second husband and at least three of her children: humans Callie, Robert, and Julian. Honestly, she might outlive some of her grandchildren. That has to hurt.
With no stemma attached, to be clear, Johnston, as Fussy’s second husband, is step-great-grandfather to Allie. Blood only matters when thinking about the Demi allele.

Continue reading ““The Fallen” 5/2″And this brings Part Four to a close. I’m beginning on Five, which I think will be the last; it always depends on who wants me to say what. Five will NOT be a half-generational step like the others have been. It will open just a few days after Allie’s rescue and immediately go deep into politics. Further, I vaguely recalled people making future-referential statements, going all the way back to Part One, and I am skimming the MS and making notes for the loose ends I need to tie up.
Once I get a few thousand words in P5, I should have a much better idea as to how all of this wraps up. I certainly could see an Epilogue where, in a year, Allie walks out of a newly bored tunnel, looks around, and says, “I’m back.”

Continue reading ““The Fallen” 4/25 (end pt4)”Bit of a pause there – not panther paws, the other kind – as I worked my way through the conclusion of Part Four; not that we’re there, yet. The old family friend has come to the rescue, a little worse for wear after a set-to with the Watcher. Nichole is almost hopefully nice, always wanting to make friends, even after over a century.
At this point, I need to get them back across the little bit of water Allie waded through way back in 4/2, I think. Not sure how to do that without attracting more unwanted attention. Then, it’s harness, cable, and up. For at least the demi-human. I’d bet Nichole 5 can take care of her self for as long as necessary.

Continue reading ““The Fallen” 4/24″A special Halloween post. This catches me up to where I’m currently writing but am still struggling with a few ideas. I always liked Halloween as a kid; the costumes more than the candy (which I suppose is why I still cosplay into my dotage) and the unofficial transition to winter. I prefer things cooler to warmer. That will undoubtedly be one of the flash points when my wife (who likes things warmer) and I move for the last time.
I have a suspicion that the next few scenes are going to be a bit odd as I work my way through this predicament Allie is in. It is thus very likely that the final form of what will be this “chapter” shall be quite different once I get this finished and edited. But, that’s why I do this: play with ideas, elicit input, and force myself on.
Yes, another reference to LotR; I cannot help myself.

Continue reading ““The Fallen” 4/22″Allie now knows that Kira and those on the surface are aware of her predicament. It is a comfort to her, to know that, sooner or later, she shall be rescued. When? That remains to be seen. In the meantime, she goes to take a look about.
I mentioned to some other writers I am dangerously close to writing myself into the kind of cavern Allie finds herself in. My stories are driven by interaction. Alone in a cave negates that. So, I’m working on a way out for myself as hard as Kira is for Allie.

Continue reading ““The Fallen” 4/21″Glad for another Friday as I’ll need a couple of days to see where the story is going; probably when I’m early to church. Having Allie wander around in the cavern is going to get really old fast. And there’s no way a teen girl is going to physically fight her way out of anything.
Speaking of church, I’ve said in other places and interviews that my Catholic faith informs my works but does not drive them. Many of the Hartmanns are Catholic; some more than others. The Empress’ father doesn’t have any faith at all (and finds his daughter’s politics to be a constant source of contention).
Oh, yes: in this segment I finally catch up to that image which started all of this a few months ago. Hope to see everyone on Monday.

Continue reading ““The Fallen” 4/20″And we draw to a conclusion of the second interlude. As they learned a lot, losing the drone is not particularly a failure. There is another on the way. And, I suspect, that if Nichole thought Allie was in mortal danger, she’d be head-first down the tunnel, orders or not.
Speaking of, we’ll be back underground. Allie accepted she was alone, found something extraordinary, met a distant relative, then was alone again. Even for a demi, that gain-loss dynamic must hurt. And I bet it hurts more to a fifteen-year-old girl. Underground. In the dark. I hope Nichole was able to reach her, give her a mental life-line. We’ll see. Things might get even darker.

Continue reading ““The Fallen” 4/19″Nichole 5, being retrospective, is kind enough to make a short summary of many of my books. After that, they find themselves retracing the path which Allie took. I’m glad she showed up, otherwise, with the drone under human control, it would have taken another 5,000 words to complete this segment. As it is, we’ll be finished here on the surface on Wednesday and back underground Friday.
I’d no idea Nichole slept (so to speak) with Gil Haven’s son, Joe. As a Model 5 – the first designed to fit seamlessly into human society – she has no sexual desire or response, per se. But, as a person, she wants those she loves to feel happy. Statistically, Joe is likely dead of age by now. This MS has covered a lot of time, and I really need to think about where I’m going once this is finished.

Continue reading ““The Fallen” 4/18″As the song goes, “A very old friend came by today…” Looking at my notes, I startled myself that Nichole 5 Clarke is right around a century old. I’ve come that far since she made her debut in Friend and Ally. While Kira is miffed at the political issues to Japan sticking its nose into this mission, she realizes that this much older person will be perfectly suited to control the drone, so far under the ground.
There’s a bit more to write before the surface team finds something startling, after which we’ll be back to check on Allie. I’m personally a bit run down today and still have to DayJob a few hours tomorrow, but I’ll keep at it.
